Senior School Overview

Senior Curriculum

In Years 7 and 8, guided by the National Minimum Curriculum for the Secondary level, students follow the core subjects English, Maltese, Mathematics, Religion, Ethics, Integrated Science, Geography, History, Information Communication Technology, Physical Education, Art, Drama and Dance, Music, Home Economics, Graphic Design, Business Studies and Personal, Social and Career Development (PSCD). We offer a choice of one foreign language (French, Italian, German) as well as Ballet as an elective.

From Year 9, the MATSEC Syllabus begins for most subjects, barring Maltese, English, Maths and the foreign languages, which commence in Year 7. At this stage, students have the opportunity to choose subjects that align with their interests and aspirations, allowing them to specialise in Arts, Sciences, Business Studies, Humanities, or a combination of various subjects. Our teachers provide guidance and support to help students make informed decisions. We structure the subject choices to keep as many post-secondary education options open as possible. This phase requires students to adopt a stricter study routine, as it lays the foundations for their future academic journey.

Further to this, at St. Michael Foundation, we recognise that today’s world requires a multi-dimensional approach to the learning experience. Building on what the students were exposed to in the primary years, through the various subjects, students are encouraged to focus on the skills and abilities that will best serve them in today’s rapidly changing world. Throughout the journey, we aim to empower students with a diverse skill set, including critical thinking, problem-solving, communication, collaboration, creativity, digital literacy, sustainability and adaptability. We believe in equipping our students with these essential skills by integrating interdisciplinary learning, global citizenship and prioritising student engagement.

Throughout the Senior years, the value and importance of the Arts is still highly recognised, and we provide numerous opportunities for students to explore, be creative and enjoy the visual and performing arts. To showcase our school talents, two concerts are held annually, as well as talent shows, art exhibitions, dance and art competitions and workshops, both locally and overseas. Cultural trips abroad are also very popular amongst the students, as is the performing arts club.

Sports also plays a very important role in our school, and our excellent sports facilities enable us to offer a wide range of disciplines. The school organises many sports events such as an annual Sports Day, and also participates in inter-school competitions, and overseas sports-related trips. There is also an after-school activity programme with various activities which students may opt for.

By providing equal opportunities for students to excel in academics, arts and sports, we ensure that we are reaching out to all our students by offering quality education through a broad and balanced curriculum, boosting each student’s self-confidence and individuality. St. Michael School combines a strong academic foundation with a forward-thinking approach, preparing students not only for future education, but also for life-long success in an ever-evolving society.

Life-long success is not solely dependent on academic achievement, which is why PSCD is an integral cog in the developmental wheel at St. Michael Foundation.

The socio-emotional and spiritual dimensions to our students are not restricted to classroom teaching, but are far-reaching in the activities organised at school, both during school hours in the form of Team Building activities and Days of Reflection, as well as outside school hours, during overnight Teencations, where values and virtues are put into practice during community-living experiences. From fostering emotional self-regulation, to conflict resolution and beyond, to mindful spirituality, students develop on a multi-dimensional level.
